Cambridge Technology Consultants (formerly OptionExist) spins out Adiabatic Logic to exploit low power technology

CAMBRIDGE, England, May 23, 2002

– Cambridge-based technical design consultancy, Cambridge Technology Consultants (formerly OptionExist), has set up a new company to exploit its portfolio of secured patents in the low power technology arena.

The spin out company, called Adiabatic Logic Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cambridge Technology Consultants. Geoff Harvey has been appointed chief technology officer and will head up the new company's technical team.

Adiabatic Logic will focus on creating and applying intellectual property (IP) to exploit the concept of 'loss-less' processes. An adiabatic process is one in which no heat is gained or lost. It is normally associated with the behaviour of gases but can be applied in other physical domains, such as electronics.

Adiabatic Logic has a patented technique with the potential to significantly reduce the power consumption of digital computer chips, such as those found in today's laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones.

Stephen Love, founder and managing director of Cambridge Technology Consultants, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for Cambridge Technology Consultants and the design team within Adiabatic Logic. We believe that there is huge potential for novel techniques which can reduce the power consumption in portable electronic devices and we will be discussing our ideas with chip companies and device developers in the months ahead."

Geoff Harvey, Adiabatic Logic's chief technology officer, said: "We have taken a fresh view of traditional design constraints to create some exciting new intellectual property. The semiconductor developers have worked hard in recent years to reduce power consumption within silicon chips and integrated circuits but have not focused on the potential for reducing power during communication between chips.

"It's in this area that our efforts are focused and we hope to have the first of a series of products to address this issue available for licensing from the first quarter of 2003."
