CAMBRIDGE, England, June 20, 2000
– Cambridge-based technical design consultancy, Cambridge Technology Consultants (formerly OptionExist), has developed a 21st century broadband phone for AT&T Laboratories. The new touch screen device enables a user to engage in a voice call while simultaneously accessing a range of multimedia services over a high-speed broadband network. These services include the ability to draw explanatory diagrams and maps for each other, share photographs, or browse the same location on the web.
Dr Andy Harter, assistant director, AT&T Laboratories in Cambridge, said: "OptionExist won the development contract against stiff competition not just on price but on the thing that really matters most, which is listening to and understanding the needs of the client.
"We were impressed by the depth of the company's hardware and software knowledge," added Harter, "and by the fact that the fully tested prototypes were delivered on time, on budget and to specification."
The broadband phone incorporates a bright touch sensitive 640x480 resolution colour screen, a low power Strong ARM processor, Linux operating system, Ethernet networking, CD quality sound, audio in/out, hands free features and is housed in a custom designed slim case.
Steve Love, founder and managing director of OptionExist, said: "This project has enabled us to demonstrate our ability to develop a product from concept right through to production. This included designing a custom memory controller to allow the Strong ARM 1100 processor to perform at the required specification, sorting out regulatory approvals, and developing functional & electrical test procedures."
OptionExist is a small and highly focused technical design consultancy, which specialises in real-time embedded systems and provides clients with creative and cost-effective solutions to new product development - from the concept stage right though to pre-production.
